More ‘Only Ones’ Protection

Are you OK with this?

(Thanks to David)

If my employer can record anything I do on their property and on their dime, why the hell do the police think they are special (don’t answer that, they’re all arrogant assholes). Well, the police are OUR employees, they need to be forced to answer to US for the crimes they commit.

The police (and ALL government employees) have absolutely NO reasonable expectation of privacy while on the clock. Since more and more police are showing themselves to be criminals, usually violent ones, I’ll be damned if I’m going to have any unrecorded interaction with them… whether I have their “permission” or not. I don’t trust them. It’s that simple.

Let’s face it, there was a time when people with a badge were respected and usually told the truth. It was easier to believe they were being honest because the people they arrested were usually criminals. Unfortunately that is no longer true. I am more inclined to believe the perp than I am to believe the badge these days. The bad part is, most juries will still believe the badge, which is why I intent to have a recording to back me up. I try not to lie, I want the proof of that.

On a similar note, what about making a button to wear on your hat or shirt that says “This conversation is being recorded for training purposes”? (Kinda like when you call most businesses)
I am making it habit to never leave the house without at least my digital audio recorder running. If nothing happens, I just delete the file, but if anything does happen I have the recording. We shouldn’t need it, but this could be our disclaimer to the police… ie, “This conversation is being recorded, if you don’t want to be recorded, walk away”. If I have time, or know in advance that I’m likely walking into trouble, I have my iPhone set up to do a live stream to YouTube (thanks to qik.com). I used this feature while in Philly in November 2010.

Before I proceed further:
I decided to call his office before completing this post so I could relay the conversation and the lady that answered the phone said that the case was dismissed. I have since sent the following email to the Circuit Clerk’s office:

A video that played on the news back in September is being circulated on
the internet and generating some anger (I am one of those angered by it).
This video is about Michael Allison’s case, he was charged 5 times for
recording the police. When I called Mr. Wiseman’s office to voice my
opinion, I was informed that the case had been dismissed. I would like to

Thank you,

I’ll update this post if/when I get a response.

UPDATE 16:55
I got a response from the Circuit Clerk’s office:

The case was declared Unconstitutional on September 15, 2011. They State’s
Attorney and Attorney General’s Office has appealed it to the Supreme Court.

So, it would seem that the Judge had some sense, but the State’s Attorney (Wiseman) and the Attorney General need a wake up call.

Give em Hell, folks.

European Justice?

OK, so I’m perusing the November 2011 issue of Chemical Processing magazine (yes, it has to do with my job, it’s really not light reading for fun… although I do find this stuff interesting) and I come across an article that intrigues me in multiple ways.
I’m just wondering if this is what we have to look forward to: Italian Trial Covers Some Shaky Ground. Basically, there are seven defendants, all of whom are geophysical scientists (earthquakes, volcanoes and the like). They served on a “disaster risk committee” for a village that was later hit by a 5.8 quake that killed more than 300 people. Shortly before the quake hit, the committee met and then held a press conference and “basically downplayed the risk of a major quake occurring soon and didn’t promote the need for earthquake preparedness“.
An important item to note: The village is in a earthquake prone area.
OK, so these 7 are being charged with manslaughter and, if convicted, could each face more than 10 years in prison. They are being charged with downplaying the risk of an earthquake in an earthquake prone area, and are thereby being accused of killing over 300 people…

OK, if you live in an earthquake prone area, you should be prepared for an earthquake, that’s a given. We also know that it is damn near impossible to predict when a big earthquake will hit.
We also expect “the big one” to hit California any day/week/month/year now, but we’re not sure when. So, if it hits tomorrow, are we going to charge the people studying geophysics in that area for not warning everyone?
Did anyone predict the earthquake that hit Virginia earlier this year? Who is to blame for not warning us about that?
What the hell is going on in the world?

Interesting

OK, I’m not sure if you’ve seen the video that Victoria Jackson posted from occupy wall street, so here it is:

At 4:21, she approaches a guy holding a sign that says “Join Us – Save Our Republic“. The interesting part (to me) is that at 5:31, she says, “So, you’re not concerned that he’s a marxist?” (Speaking about Obama). His reply is, “heh, you’re speaking to a democratic socialist yourself right now, so uh, no I don’t believe he’s a marxist in the truest sense of marxism…”

And then, for kicks, fast forward to 13:30 where one of the guys claims that “Obama is the greatest republican president since Eisenhower”. Listen to the rest of that guy. He’s in his own little world of interesting.
