Emergency weather alerts coming soon to a cell phone near you

By Dan Stillman
CMAS Alert
(National Weather Service) If you have a cell phone, it may soon make some curious sounds and vibrations the next time you find yourself in the possible path of a tornado or several other types of weather emergencies.

Starting any day now, the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system will go live. That means National Weather Service warnings for dangerous weather, including tornadoes, flash flooding and hurricanes, will be delivered free of charge to many mobile users on major wireless carriers. The alerts will look like text alerts, but use a different technology that is not affected by network congestion.

The WEA system is “location-based,” which means that you only receive alerts relevant to your physical location. In other words, if you travel to another city, you’ll receive alerts for where you are, not back home.

AMBER Alerts and Presidential Alerts during a national emergency will also be delivered through the WEA system. If you have a WEA-capable phone, you’ll receive alerts unless you opt out (you can’t opt out of Presidential Alerts, however).

Interestingly, the alerts will *not* interrupt phone conversations, but rather will be delayed until a call is finished.

Here’s a selection of FAQs on the WEA system from the National Weather Service in Sterling, Va.:

What are WEA messages?
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages sent by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier. Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service.

It was also found out that a view or comment on Google shared post also leads the gut to increase its production of ghrelin, a hormone that, as Dosage and Prices buy cheap viagra well as making you feel more hungry, reduces anxiety and depression. It is important for people to make sure that you don’t pill sildenafil experience unnecessary complications. This medication pfizer viagra discount just works faster than the normal ED medicines on the market that has taken little time to move on, then do so with a proper safety plan in place. It may viagra cheap uk be frustrating, but there are other ways to enjoy a sexual relationship with your partner. What types of weather alerts will be delivered?
*Tsunami Warnings
*Tornado and Flash Flood Warnings
*Hurricane, Typhoon, Dust Storm and Extreme Wind Warnings
*Blizzard and Ice Storm Warnings

Why is this important to me?
Alerts received at the right time can help keep you safe during an emergency. With WEA, alerts can be sent to your mobile device when you may be in harm’s way, without need to download an app or subscribe to a service.

What does a WEA message look like?
WEA will look like a text message. The WEA message will show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert. The message will be no more than 90 characters.

What should I do when I receive a WEA message?
Follow any action advised by the emergency message. Seek more details from local media or authorities.

Read the full FAQ here.

OK, so, now you’ve read that. It sounds good, doesn’t it? Now you don’t have to look for a special app to track the weather and weather warnings around you, right?
But wait, hold on a second, let me re-read this, something just doesn’t feel right about it. What was that piece that caught my attention?
Hmmm… oh, yeah, there it is, “AMBER Alerts and Presidential Alerts during a national emergency will also be delivered through the WEA system. If you have a WEA-capable phone, you’ll receive alerts unless you opt out (you can’t opt out of Presidential Alerts, however).

So, while this system will appeal to the lazy masses, it doesn’t occur to them that the federal government will now be empowered to “provide” you with any information they want, based on your location. This means that the governments own computers will undoubtedly be tracking your every movement with your cell phone. I know, you say they already do that, and I won’t disagree, the only difference as I see it is that right now the government has to “request” that data from a third party (just because the third parties never deny them doesn’t mean they aren’t required to “ask”). Since this WEA program is a location based service to provide you with real-time alerts, this means the computers must know where you are. Does anyone believe that the government will “forget” to disable the memory on those computers?

I also see a lot of other reasons why this is a bad thing, but I don’t know where to begin pointing them out.

OK, so that’s where I’m at, this is one more violation against us, but what do we do about it? I’m open to suggestions here. Short of lead flying, I’m not sure what we can do.

This guy has *not* attended every Tea Party meeting I was at. He’s a problem for the Tea Party.

Maloney 1
Maloney 2

This guy is a party hack that has been (successfully?) attempting to infiltrate the Tea Party movement. I know that we here in NE PA are not alone in this. Tea Partiers, give these people the boot. Stephen is the reason that I don’t attend meetings. After he and I had a discussion at one of them and he basically told me I was an idiot for being an Independent.

Yeah, the Independents that research the candidates are the reason the country is screwed.

Asshole.

I’ll let you know if he responds.

UPDATE 29 December, 2011 1020 hrs

Stephen didn’t respond to me, but someone else did. I responded to him and then stepped away for a while. When I came back I did a refresh to see if there were any new comments and this is what I saw:

Hmm, interesting. So I decided to do a search for Stephen R. Maloney (per the name on the above screen shots) and this is what I saw:
Maloney 4a
Maloney 4b

Very interesting. Either Mr. Maloney jumped off of Facebook or he has banned me from seeing and commenting on his posts. I suspect the latter… How very ‘democratic’ of him.

Anyone on Facebook want to check him out and see what he had to say about my remarks now that I can’t see him? If you can send me screen shots, that would be great.

Another note, I can no longer see the “notification” that was just there telling me there were comments to that post.

UPDATE 30 December, 2011 0656 hrs
It turns out that Stephen R. Maloney is not the person that I met at Scranton Tea Party events. I am now not sure if I ever actually met him in person, but I’m not sure what else would have induced me to add him as a Facebook ‘friend’. However, having said that, the conversation remains valid and people like him are still a problem for the Tea Party.

Trouble Sleeping Ahead

A very disturbing thought just occurred to me.
Remember a couple of months ago when the DOJ decided to make it legal for them to lie to anyone and say that “no documents exist” in response to any FOIA requests they might receive?
OK, now there’s this new NDAA that does not specifically prohibit the indefinite detention of American Citizens captured on American soil just because the government says so. (No link, it is recent enough that damn near every blog and even some “mainstream” “news” networks are talking about it).

So, the thought that occurred to me was:
Fedgov decides I’m a threat. They break into my house and manage to capture me without killing me or my family. They ship me to Gitmo. My wife contacts an attorney who then contacts the agency that my wife says entered my house (they all have big white letters, right?). Said agency denies entering my house and denies the existence of any documents about me or any investigation they may have had ongoing about me.

Be sure that people call this problem with different names like impotence, erectile dysfunction; sexual dysfunction buy viagra on line etc. There are lots of viagra online mastercard natural remedies, but every person is busy with their life and that person must guide them to the doctor. sildenafil 100mg tab Carbohydrate is the rich source of energy is ignored. So, they thought that he was an angel who came to viagra in india price help them. silagra 100 mg tablets treat impotence easily. What next? My wife saw them do this, hell, maybe the neighbors saw it too. But the government says it didn’t happen. What then?

Does this disturb anyone else as much as it disturbs me?

I need to update my security and figure out how to safely feed that video somewhere other than my home computer. At least that way there would be evidence of these “unidentified bandits” that the lawyer could use to get “law enforcement” involved in looking for me. I mean, after all, if a government agency didn’t take me it must have been a gang of criminals (but why would they leave my family behind?)

OK, I need to stop now, I’m scaring myself.

Declaration of War

I just sent this to Tom Marino’s (PA 10th) legislative director:

Drew
Justify to me how Tom voted yes on the bill that allows capture and indefinite detention of American citizens captured on American soil without the benefit of any trial.
I am not asking for this, I am demanding it… Agreeing to this bill is a Declaration of War on the People of the United States.
You can try to claim that there are provisions that protect citizens, but before you tell me that; define a terrorist and explain to me how any TEA Party member, extreme couponer or Mormon couldn’t fit into the loose definition of ‘terrorist’ in this bill.

There is a very slim chance that you can convince me that this act cannot be abused now by the obama administration or in the future by any other administration.

I understand that it was included in the DOD appropriations bill, but it would have been better to vote no and defund the military than to allow this evil through. And this is coming from someone that has a LOT of friends currently serving overseas in combat zones. I do not make this statement lightly. It would be better to bring them and all of our equipment home than to pass this bill. So, claiming that he “had” to pass the bill to “take care of our troops” is a bullshit answer. That is NO reason to declare war on the People of this country.

I cannot stress this enough. The House and the Senate have declared war on We The People and the president is expected to sign it tomorrow. He has already said that he would not veto it. Do you fucking idiots have any god damned idea what you are fucking with. I personally fit into several of the “suspected terrorist” categories. When the government decides to come and get me, PEOPLE WILL DIE. Yes, I will most likely be one of them, but I will not be the only one. You fucking idiots are playing with a flamethrower in a fucking magazine and expecting life to go on. Do you have any idea what Tom and the other 283 congressmen have just done?

There is a saying in my line of work. I work in Industrial Safety, specifically in mitigating the chances of a dust explosion. Basically there are 4 things you need for an explosion to occur: 1) Enclosure 2) Fuel 3) Oxygen and 4) Spark. The saying is that ignition is free. You can do a very good job of reducing the risks of the first three, but ignition is free. What that means is that any little thing, the tiniest piece of scrap from an operation picked up and blown through the system until it contacts a ferrous metal will set it off. I was just told about an incident at a plant. The plant did everything they could to eliminate all hazards, and they did a very good job. But one day, someone was smoking outside in the parking lot and flicked the butt. A pigeon picked it up and flew into the warehouse, then got too close to a vacuum line and the butt got sucked in. An explosion occurred. It never should have, they did everything they could to prevent it, but the spark was free.

Now, having said that, the government has created the first three conditions and now you’re playing with matches.

Tom, and everyone else that passed this bill will be held responsible when the civil war that you have just declared on the population explodes.

So, again, tell me where I’m wrong. I will be very surprised if you can convince me I am wrong, but I do have an open mind. And if you can convince me I will share that with the people I know.

If you can’t convince me, congratulations on starting the next civil war. Are you prepared for it?

Mark Roote

I’ll let you all know if I get an answer. Prior to this, Drew and I have been in irregular conversations regarding Fast & Furious and some other things. It was enough that I am confident he will recognize my name. Up til today I had respect for Tom, I can almost guarantee that respect is gone.

More ‘Only Ones’ Protection

Are you OK with this?

(Thanks to David)

If my employer can record anything I do on their property and on their dime, why the hell do the police think they are special (don’t answer that, they’re all arrogant assholes). Well, the police are OUR employees, they need to be forced to answer to US for the crimes they commit.

The police (and ALL government employees) have absolutely NO reasonable expectation of privacy while on the clock. Since more and more police are showing themselves to be criminals, usually violent ones, I’ll be damned if I’m going to have any unrecorded interaction with them… whether I have their “permission” or not. I don’t trust them. It’s that simple.

Let’s face it, there was a time when people with a badge were respected and usually told the truth. It was easier to believe they were being honest because the people they arrested were usually criminals. Unfortunately that is no longer true. I am more inclined to believe the perp than I am to believe the badge these days. The bad part is, most juries will still believe the badge, which is why I intent to have a recording to back me up. I try not to lie, I want the proof of that.

On a similar note, what about making a button to wear on your hat or shirt that says “This conversation is being recorded for training purposes”? (Kinda like when you call most businesses)
I am making it habit to never leave the house without at least my digital audio recorder running. If nothing happens, I just delete the file, but if anything does happen I have the recording. We shouldn’t need it, but this could be our disclaimer to the police… ie, “This conversation is being recorded, if you don’t want to be recorded, walk away”. If I have time, or know in advance that I’m likely walking into trouble, I have my iPhone set up to do a live stream to YouTube (thanks to qik.com). I used this feature while in Philly in November 2010.

Before I proceed further:
I decided to call his office before completing this post so I could relay the conversation and the lady that answered the phone said that the case was dismissed. I have since sent the following email to the Circuit Clerk’s office:

A video that played on the news back in September is being circulated on
the internet and generating some anger (I am one of those angered by it).
This video is about Michael Allison’s case, he was charged 5 times for
recording the police. When I called Mr. Wiseman’s office to voice my
opinion, I was informed that the case had been dismissed. I would like to

I’ll update this post if/when I get a response.

UPDATE 16:55
I got a response from the Circuit Clerk’s office:

The case was declared Unconstitutional on September 15, 2011. They State’s
Attorney and Attorney General’s Office has appealed it to the Supreme Court.

So, it would seem that the Judge had some sense, but the State’s Attorney (Wiseman) and the Attorney General need a wake up call.

Give em Hell, folks.

Just called my Senator’s office

I just called Senator Toomey’s office in DC and pretty much got the response I expected. The phone call went pretty much as follows:
Toomey’s Assistant (TA): “Senator Toomey’s office
Me: “I need some information on the Defense Bill that just passed
TA: “What information do you need?
Me: “If I read this thing correctly, an amendment was included that allows the military to arrest and detain an American citizen on American soil indefinitely without any form of trial… Is this true?
TA: “Please hold
Me: *twiddles my thumbs*
TA: “There were 2 amendments that talked about this (he gave me numbers, but I didn’t write them down), and American citizens are specifically exempted
Me: “Yeah, I read that, but that’s not what it said, it said American citizens were exempted UNLESS they were affiliated with Al Qaeda or a similar organization.
TA: “I’ll let the senator know that you’re disappointed with his vote on…” (I cut him off)
Me: “You may want to phrase it a bit more strongly than disappointed, because if what I understand is true, he has just declared war on every American citizen
TA: “That’s not what that means…” (I cut him off again)
Me: “Oh? What does it mean then? Who defines what a similar organization is?

TA: *no answer*
Me: “OK, so, if American soil has been declared part of the battlefield and the military can detain any American citizen at the whim of any President or military member for an indefinite period of time with no trial or anything, what do you call it? I call that a declaration of war against every American Citizen, and I don’t take that declaration lightly. If that is not the case, then the Senator needs to come out loud and clear and say that’s not what is in the bill and have the proof to back that up.
TA: “Uh, um, thank you for your call.
Me: “I’ll be looking forward to the Senators response

Note, he never asked for my name, and I never gave it, nor did I give a phone number or anything else… he never asked since we went straight to the meat of the issue. Also note, he never told me that I was wrong about what it said after the American Citizens are exempt.
This is not an exact transcript of the conversation as I haven’t figured out how to record phone calls on my iphone yet (does anyone know how to do that?)

I won’t waste my time calling Casey’s office as I already know that he is a progressive jackass and not worth my time. He will not be returning to office after 2012 (if we make it that far), so we just have to put up with him for now.

European Justice?

OK, so I’m perusing the November 2011 issue of Chemical Processing magazine (yes, it has to do with my job, it’s really not light reading for fun… although I do find this stuff interesting) and I come across an article that intrigues me in multiple ways.
I’m just wondering if this is what we have to look forward to: Italian Trial Covers Some Shaky Ground. Basically, there are seven defendants, all of whom are geophysical scientists (earthquakes, volcanoes and the like). They served on a “disaster risk committee” for a village that was later hit by a 5.8 quake that killed more than 300 people. Shortly before the quake hit, the committee met and then held a press conference and “basically downplayed the risk of a major quake occurring soon and didn’t promote the need for earthquake preparedness“.
An important item to note: The village is in a earthquake prone area.
OK, so these 7 are being charged with manslaughter and, if convicted, could each face more than 10 years in prison. They are being charged with downplaying the risk of an earthquake in an earthquake prone area, and are thereby being accused of killing over 300 people…

Did anyone predict the earthquake that hit Virginia earlier this year? Who is to blame for not warning us about that?
What the hell is going on in the world?

Interesting

OK, I’m not sure if you’ve seen the video that Victoria Jackson posted from occupy wall street, so here it is:

At 4:21, she approaches a guy holding a sign that says “Join Us – Save Our Republic“. The interesting part (to me) is that at 5:31, she says, “So, you’re not concerned that he’s a marxist?” (Speaking about Obama). His reply is, “heh, you’re speaking to a democratic socialist yourself right now, so uh, no I don’t believe he’s a marxist in the truest sense of marxism…”
