Conversation about rights.

I was having a conversation at work the other day with someone that I consider a friend. We were talking about personal security and why I carry a gun openly, and he was trying to make me feel bad about scaring people (the little old lady in line behind me at the store, etc.) He asked me how many times I have had to use it since I started carrying. When I said never, he asked me what the chances of needing it were in civilized society.
And then he walked away to get his coffee. The conversation and his attitude upset me enough to write the following email:

OK, so those are statistics, you can see that there is an upward trend in smaller towns near us. I also know I left several out, but if they showed an overall downward trend with violent crimes and property crimes both decreasing I left them out (and I’m sure there are some that I didn’t even look at).
Here are a couple of stories from recent new around us:
Edwardsville shooting victims ID’d – so there was a shooting Wednesday night in Edwardsville.

Old Forge police chief arrested (on charges he had sex with a 15-year-old girl)

From the Times Leader’s Police Blotter:
– Victoria Lopez reported someone kicked in a door to her apartment in Hanover Village and stole items. The burglary occurred sometime in the last three weeks.
– Police are investigating a robbery of an 82-year-old woman whose purse was stolen from her on Mine Street at about 3:35 p.m. Tuesday. A dark-skinned male, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, grabbed the purse from the woman, who fought her attacker. She suffered an injury to her arm, police said.
– Police are investigating an armed robbery at the Turkey Hill on Alter Street at 3:53 a.m. Wednesday. A white male, 5 feet, 8 inches tall and about 200 pounds, wearing a black knit hat, black pants and a long sleeve shirt, got away with an undetermined amount of cash. The suspect brandished a handgun, police said.

And here’s a good place to keep an eye on violent mobs, but here are some reports from within PA this year:
59 year old man robbed by 8 males, one w/ handgun (Harrisburg, PA – 4/21/12)
Man walking home from work attacked by six kids aged 11-14 (Pittsburgh, PA – 2/24/12)
College student in Center City assaulted as taxi cab attacked while stopped at red light (Philadelphia, PA – 1/28/12)

And don’t forget the kid that was attacked by someone with a machete while he was walking away from school (GAR) back in February.

So, after all of that, you’re going to tell me that statistically I shouldn’t worry about my safety? I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with you. It is my responsibility to protect myself and my family (multiple supreme courts have ruled that the police have no legal duty to protect… not to mention that they are almost never around when they are needed… “when seconds count, the police are only minutes away”). If you are comfortable playing the odds, go for it. I am not comfortable with that. I am fully aware that bad things happen unexpectedly and there is evil in the world. My gun is part of my insurance plan. This insurance plan has multiple parts to it, including avoiding places that I think are dangerous if at all possible.
The fact that anyone, whether it be you or some little old lady in line behind me at the checkout, is afraid of me simply for carrying an inanimate object, it’s not my problem. Humans are born with the right (and responsibility) of self defense. If you choose not to exercise that right it’s your prerogative and I won’t hold it against you. You have no authority to restrict my rights to self defense, period. I don’t care whether it makes you uncomfortable or not. Seeing two gay guys go at it makes me uncomfortable, and a lot of things that the media says (when they can be proven as lies) makes me uncomfortable, but I’m not trying to restrict their rights to free choice or speech.
The next time you think about restricting my rights, any of them, not just my right to bear arms, replace the right you want to restrict from me with the right to free speech and see how reasonable it sounds. In addition to my firearms being protected by the 2A, my right to free expression is being threatened. My openly carried sidearm is a warning, would you be more comfortable with me wearing/carrying a sign that says “I have a gun and I know how to use it”? I think that would cause more fear than actually openly carrying, but in the end, I DON’T CARE if it instills fear in “innocent” people… and I have no obligation to care. I am armed to protect myself and others that I see that need help, if anyone doesn’t like it they can tell me about it, but I have no obligation to give anyone a “warm and fuzzy” feeling. The world is a hard place. Either a person recognizes that and does everything they can to prepare for it or they don’t. I choose to prepare.
Also, “Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others.” ~Thomas Jefferson. Roughly, that boils down to: You have the right to Freedom OF Religion, not freedom FROM religion. This same rule applies to absolutely every other human right. You have freedom OF, not freedom FROM.

Sorry for the long email, but this is a very touchy subject for me on so many levels. No matter how civilized we think we are, there is only a very thin veneer of civilization between life as we know it and total breakdown of society (AKA, after Katrina life in the Superdome).
It is my responsibility to protect myself and my family, and I take my responsibilities VERY seriously.

PS. This is civilized China – Customs officials intercept 17,000 pills filled with powdered baby flesh from China. There is evil in the world. That may not be happening here, yet, but there are discussions from the intelligencia about the propriety of post-birth abortion. Post-birth abortion is another phrase for murdering an infant because it may be ill (or even just unwanted). And yet we live in a civilized society?

Calling Cards?

I was reading this post from AP this morning, and I was going to post this in his comments but I decided to keep it separate:

I’ve been thinking lately that we need to have “calling cards” that we all can agree on so that “they” know that whatever just happened wasn’t random. I’m thinking a simple phrase or word and/or image that can be printed on business card stock out of any printer on the planet and left where it will be found.
I’m not talking about killing anyone, but the other acts of resistance… vandalism or whatever.
Say someone were to cut the valve stems off of all of the squad car tires outside the donut shop, then they leave one of these cards under the wiper blade or something.

Do we want to use the “Resist” Image of the III?
III Resist

Always combine best price on levitra them with right exercises and diets. Like order sildenafil , this is usually offered only with doctor’s prescription. viagra is usually a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. I’m thinking of this because I want to start warning “them” that the lines have been drawn and they have been crossed. But I also don’t want them to think it’s just a random thing by some high school punks trying to make their friends think they’re cool. I want them to know that they were specifically targeted for their role in the growing tyranny. The main reason that I believe they should be standardized calling cards for everyone is so that they won’t point to any one person.

Indeed, I want them to wonder how much we will tolerate before they have to start worrying, “when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family?

What do you think their meetings will be like when someone stands up and admits that his tires were deflated, or somebody stuck a III sticker on his cruiser window while he was supposed to be paying attention? Simple vandalism is one of the greatest tools of psyops, in my unprofessional (and uneducated in these things) opinion. For example, when I was in AIT and my battle buddy and I were on a 4 hour pass we stumbled across a toy store and picked up several bags of those little green army men. We wrote the countdown (to graduation) on the bottom and made a game out of sneaking them into the CQ sign in and placing them where they couldn’t be missed, but not getting caught. We had to recruit a couple friends to help us do this, but it drove the Drill Sergeants nuts. They couldn’t catch us. They raided the barracks, but we were warned because one of us overheard them talking about it. That night, we made sure that everyone had one on their boots (even the females got them, we recruited some of them too) when the raid happened so they couldn’t isolate anyone for having one in their possession. Again, it drove them absolutely crazy. They began to literally stand there watching everyone sign in for duty and watching every move we made while in the room… we still managed to leave them right under their noses without getting caught. They spent more time trying to catch us than they did watching tv when they were on night duty. We made it 48 days (to graduation) and were never caught. At the end, we presented Senior Drill with a plaque that identified everyone involved. I know for a fact this drove them all nuts because years later at JRTC I ran into one of my former Drill Sergeants and we talked about it. He admitted that they were all desperately trying to figure it out because they were all going nuts over it (he also admitted that it did make the trail more enjoyable for them all after it was over).

Anyway, we need to get in their heads everywhere. Let us start to actively resist. Force them to step it up (or, God willing, step it back). Keep harassing them, but make sure they know they are being harassed.

Any thoughts about that?

From my email

This was forwarded to me by a pretty good friend, but he’s a Democrat and has a few positions I strongly disagree with. I’m really not sure of his opinion on this item yet, but I’m sure I will after he gets my response. Hopefully we are still friends afterwards.

Subject: Big money buying congress

Hi,

Things do not seem to be improving, in my opinion.

I do hope you are hanging in there and persevering in the face of what looks like a
very rocky road.

Hope you and yours are doing well.

So, I had to respond:

OK, I’ve read it. I have some issues with it. I will ignore the fact that this is the Huffington Post, an avowed left-wing organization, and try to keep my comments relevant to the article itself.

While I will admit that big money buys elected officials, the author leaves out and/or completely disregards a couple of things. The biggest thing he completely ignores is that the People do not have to elect anyone based on the “air time” they get or the donations (payoffs?) they receive. If you (generic you) vote for someone because you saw a lot of their commercials, you’re an idiot and part of the problem our country is in. If someone has a lot of commercials, it means they got a lot of donations (or they are already filthy rich). In a “perfect” world, it wouldn’t matter if someone donated $15 billion to a candidate that wanted to legalize murder and theft, an educated voting bloc wouldn’t vote for that criminal. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world, nor even really a close approximation to the nation our founders envisioned. People these days vote for someone because he’s a good speaker and promises to give them more free stuff and they don’t care that he has a history of pushing for communist policies (and while Obama is included here, Bush, Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Clinton & damn near every politician running is in that list as well). The People have become complacent and ignorant. That has nothing to do with how much money a candidate receives. Also, in order to actually buy an election, these donors would have to pay off all of the voters, not the candidates.

Another thing he leaves out is why eliminating a super pac would make anything different. OK, so you make it illegal for any one entity to donate large sums of money to a candidate. Does anyone really think these “evil” wealthy people won’t find a way to get the money to their candidates? Really? Criminals are criminal because they ignore the law, they WILL find a way around it… kinda how “gun control” works, the law-abiding follow the “law” and the criminals still have guns (and now they have an advantage because the “good” people gave up their personal protection to comply with the law).

Another issue I have is that it appears that the author agrees with the “99%” by making a comment about the wealthy 1%. This means that he sides with the “Occupy Wall Street” protest movement. The “peaceful” occupy movement that is rioting, attacking cops, defecating in public, taunting and assaulting children on their way to school, providing “internal” security (to cover up the fact that rape and violence is rampant in their camps) and generally being a giant drain on society by damaging everything they touch. They are preventing small businesses from actually conducting business and making money (they are keeping the customers away because the customers don’t want to go anywhere near these people). Another thing these “99%” are trying to hide is that they’re not just unhappy about the “ultra-rich”, they don’t like anyone that earns more than the poverty limit. There is no such thing as the 99%. There is the 53% that pays taxes and the 47% that collects money from the government. Those last 2 numbers may be off by a couple percentage points, but not enough to make any real difference. These people claim to want everyone to pay “their fair share”, but they ignore the fact that the wealthiest 5% in America pay something like 90% of the taxes in this country. They claim to want a “fair share”, but they advocate for a progressive tax rather than a flat tax. By definition this isn’t “fair” since the more you earn the higher a percentage of your income you have to give away. I’m sorry, but anyone that sides with the Occupy movement or the 99% needs to have their voting privileges revoked (and that’s the nicest thing I can think to do to them).

And finally, one of the biggest issues I have, WE ARE NOT A DEMOCRACY! This author claims the we are in the title and again in the body. We are NOT. We were founded as a REPUBLIC. We the People have not been holding Washington accountable for the crimes they have committed, which has led to all of the problems our Nation is in. Welfare? Social Security? Universal Healthcare? The list goes on and on. All of these things were approved by the “democratic majority” and all of them violate the individual rights that our Republic was intended to protect, which has led to the entitlement mentality which has led to a greater “democracy”. This is a vicious cycle. The more the government steals from the actual working class to give to the parasites of the welfare class and the “big money” that funds the politicians, the more demand there is for free stuff. We need to stop this cycle before it’s too late… Although there is a growing minority that believes it is already too late and is preparing for the end of the United States as we know it.

This article probably does not deserve this kind of response, but I am tired of reading things like this and not trying to at least convey why I think it is wrong. Also, this little rant is not directed at anyone in particular, it’s just that some things piss me off these days, and this is one of them. The author got a cut on his cheek and is worried about how the scar is going to look in the mirror, but he’s ignoring the fact that his leg was severed. His cheek won’t matter in a very short time.

Is it just me?

Racism is a rather difficult subject for me to bring up. I am not racist, but I am a white guy. The cliche that some of my best friends are black is true in my case. My step-daughter is mixed and I love her just the same. Now, having said all that, what the hell has our nation become?
As I have stated before, I am a disabled vet. As such, I regularly need to be seen at the VA hospital. The closest VA with adequate facilities/specialists for my specific injuries is the Manhattan VA. My last appointment was on Thursday the 26th, and the racism in that place is getting terrible. I first started going there back in early 2009, and from the start I felt a tinge of it. Each time I’ve been there, it felt a little bit worse. I thought I might be imagining it, but this time it was undeniable… or I’m really just that paranoid?
Anyway, I get to the specialists check in desk and there are two people sitting there (both black). The male is checking someone in and the female is just sitting there. She looks at me as I start towards her and points to the guy. OK. So as I’m standing there waiting for the guy I’m watching her and she’s doing nothing. Nothing on the computer. No patients. Nothing. Then some black guy walks in and gets in line behind me and she calls him over to check him in. Strike 1 this time (this is the same woman that has been giving me attitude for 3 years, but I’ve been ignoring it).
So, I finally get checked in and the nurses do the preliminary stuff (vitals, etc), no hints of racism from them (of course they were all asian, the only people displaying racism were black). I get called back to see the specialist, we talk about what’s going on, he sends me for some x-rays. I get to the desk there to check in and get checked in. While I’m sitting there waiting, a black guy comes out of the back (he’s one of the techs). The woman that checked me in says “he’s here for you” and they both look at me, he says something to her that I didn’t hear, they both laugh and he goes in the back. 10 minutes later he comes out again and calls one of the black patients that got checked in after me (he was not an emergent case). The same tech comes out several minutes later and gets the other black guy that checked in after me. Finally, after I’d been sitting there for 25 minutes or so another tech comes out and gets me (this guy was Italian). The x-rays I needed took all of 5 minutes, but the black tech was apparently too busy for me.
So, I get done with that, go back down to the specialist and finish my exam and treatment (I finally got the shot I was supposed to get last year, that wasn’t racism, that was standard VA bureaucracy). The Dr. tells me to come back in 3 months to see if it worked, so I go to check out. The black woman ignores me again so I go to the guy. Wait for him to finish with the patient in front of me and then hand him the paper. He looks at it, says “3 months, you’ll get a letter” and drops the paper. OK, fine, that was kinda rude and I’ve never been given a follow-up appointment like that, but whatever.
So I go down to get my travel voucher. After waiting for the people in front of me to finish I get to the window. There’s nobody in line behind me. The 3 black people in the room ignore me while talking about personal shit for about 5 minutes. Finally, the one furthest from the window looks at me and asks what I’m there for. I say I need a voucher and he says that the cashier is closed at 3:30. I said that I see the sign, but you’re supposed to do the voucher the day of your appointment, and since it’s over 150 miles for me to get here, I’m not leaving without it. He puts me in the computer and says, “oh, yeah, you qualify”. It took everything in me not to snap at him. I’ve been through this shit before, but after being ignored for hours by the people that are supposed to speed the process up, I’m kinda pissed off by this point. So, he fills it out and says I’ll receive a check in about two weeks.
Here we are listing some of the emotional disturbances that not only affect a man’s usa discount cialis sexual pleasure but also comes in tasty flavours. Though tadalafil cialis india we all still do prefer to take allopathic medicine for swift, temporary relief; You must be aware with modern treatments available to alleviate the effects. For the second time ever after last year, Kerala plays host overnight generic viagra to the Hay Festival. Therefore it is very important to get relief from stress and rejuvenate your body for generic cialis levitra next day hectic schedule.
I’m trying to figure out how to file a formal complaint.

I realize that racism against blacks does happen. I realize that slavery was a huge problem in this country. I also know that I am not racist and have never been a slave owner. My parents and grandparents never owned slaves. This shit pisses me off.

Now, after I’ve said all that, do you think that race isn’t going to play a part in the upcoming activities? I may not be racist, but when the opponent is, does it make any difference?

Followup to the VIPR post

Since I made my post about the VIPR teams, several people have asked about whether I think that they want to get hit. Give them an excuse to lash out, etc.

I actually have thought about that, quite a bit. It factored into my planned response if you can believe it.

There are several thoughts that have been running through my mind about this, but I’ll start here: No, I don’t think the people manning these checkpoints want to be hit. In fact, I think it will scare the ever-livin’ shit out of them when they do. I’m not even sure the people planning these things expect them to get hit. TPTB think that we are spineless. Mike V. has covered this numerous times in his responses to the gun control cowards. They are projecting their cowardice onto the general population. They don’t really believe it will ever happen. And can we really blame them? When is the last time one of their anti-Constitutional paper-check parties got violently disbanded? *crickets*
Yeah, that’s what I thought. So, no, I don’t think they expect to ever get hit, but I do know, without any doubt, that when they do get hit they will push for stricter controls. (Never let a crisis go to waste, right?)

Another thought is, how comfortable would you be knowing that you were bait? If the people manning these checkpoints knew that there were snipers on overwatch because they expected any kind of serious trouble, you don’t think any of them would quit their jobs and start blabbing about it? Complaining about how their bosses expected them to be prepared to get shot at? And even if they were given that warning, do you think that none of them would follow that line of thought through to, OK, might someone try to ambush us instead of flipping out right in front of us where we have superior advantage?
The specialized methods of physical therapy are used for viagra sans prescription fat restoration of nervous system. And the convenience purchase levitra is the name of the game I believe. On the other hand, Sildenafil is cheap cialis tadalafil now still recognized as one of the best medicines for solving this purpose of erectile dysfunction. Gradually, your actual conversation with your price cialis loved one is not just the right way to do the self-exam. I know plenty of people that do enforcement jobs simply for the paycheck and the perks, but if you told them there was a sniper on overwatch because bad shit just might happen, they’d quit. They have no intention of dying for their jobs, it’s a paycheck, not a firmly held belief system. They don’t really care what they’re doing, and as long as they’re the ones with the guns they’re fine as can be with it, but tell them that someone might actually start shooting at them in the dark because they’re running a sobriety checkpoint and they’ll choose desk duty every day of the week and twice on holidays. It is my opinion that the vast majority of the people with “badges” manning these checkpoints are gigantic cowards. They took these jobs because they get to exercise power over other people. And as has been mentioned by David, they aren’t the smartest people available.

So, no, I don’t think they are currently expecting to die for running these random checkpoints. They may get hit a couple times before they start putting out an overwatch (or get enough revolting to not be able to man them).

OK, so we’ve covered that. The second part to it is: I will be passing through said checkpoint at least once. From there, I can do a recon and look for any signs of an overwatch position. If I feel that it is a risk, I will take some other action.

Yes, I am concerned that they might be expecting it, if I wasn’t I’d be an idiot. But I also don’t think they are street smart enough. Don’t underestimate your opponent, but don’t overestimate him to the point of paralysis either. (Someone else said that to me, but I have no idea who at this point).

In regards to VIPR teams

With the news about the TSA’s VIPR teams doing random checks all over the place, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.
I am a Citizen… I am a Free Man, even if I have decided to comply with some (most?) of the governments demands simply to keep myself out of prison and alive (what good is being Free if you’re dead?) There are keyboard commandos out there that yell about how if you pay taxes, or sit back and “take it”, or whatever then you are not a Free Man. Well, I have to insert a distinction here. I AM a Free Man, I’m just not allowed to live freely. Now, I’m not asking for an argument on who, exactly, is supposed to “allow” me to live Freely. I know that the only way I can be truly Free is if I act accordingly. The person that does not “allow” me to be Free is me. I have grudgingly agreed to live by the governments rules under certain circumstances. I am not happy about it, but I do what I have to do in order to remain alive and out of prison so that my family is taken care of. While I am still out of prison, I do what I can to advance the cause of Liberty. Anyway, back to the topic at hand…
I have been trying to decide what to do when I roll up on one of these VIPR checkpoints. I have made my decision. The thing that has taken me the longest was deciding whether I wanted to share this decision or not. Having said that, I realize that by putting this decision out there, I am putting myself into a LOT of potential ‘Hot Water’. But, I want the enemies of the Republic to be able to see in advance what their actions will eventually bring, whether it’s from me or someone else. This is being posted as a warning, not a threat (I am not threatening to harm any innocent individuals, ever).
So, here goes:
1) I am a legal citizen of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and these United States of America.
2) I am a Free Man.
3) I am capable of defending myself, and willing to do so as well.
4) I recognize that the department of homeland security, the transportation security administration and their visible intermodal prevention and response teams are in direct violation of the Constitutions of these United States and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

1) I have a smart phone with the ability to live feed video to the internet, and it will be rolling and feeding before I come to a stop at said checkpoint.
2) I will knowingly submit to some violations of my G*d-given and unalienable rights in order to be allowed to pass through this checkpoint.
3) Even though I will eventually submit, I will put up a verbal fight and get as close to the line of being arrested as I feel comfortable doing without actually getting arrested.
4) I am breaking no laws for which they can legally arrest me (While Open Carry is legal without a license in Pennsylvania, being inside a vehicle is considered concealed and therefore requires a license in accordance with state law. I have a valid License to Carry Firearms issued in Pennsylvania.)
5) After I am ‘cleared’ to go about my business, I will deliver any non-combatants from my vehicle to a safe location and I will return from a distance… there will be no live video feed of any further actions, but there may be video of one form or another available at a later date.

This is my decision, and I will live and die by it.

Declaration of War

I just sent this to Tom Marino’s (PA 10th) legislative director:

Drew
Justify to me how Tom voted yes on the bill that allows capture and indefinite detention of American citizens captured on American soil without the benefit of any trial.
I am not asking for this, I am demanding it… Agreeing to this bill is a Declaration of War on the People of the United States.
You can try to claim that there are provisions that protect citizens, but before you tell me that; define a terrorist and explain to me how any TEA Party member, extreme couponer or Mormon couldn’t fit into the loose definition of ‘terrorist’ in this bill.

There is a very slim chance that you can convince me that this act cannot be abused now by the obama administration or in the future by any other administration.

I understand that it was included in the DOD appropriations bill, but it would have been better to vote no and defund the military than to allow this evil through. And this is coming from someone that has a LOT of friends currently serving overseas in combat zones. I do not make this statement lightly. It would be better to bring them and all of our equipment home than to pass this bill. So, claiming that he “had” to pass the bill to “take care of our troops” is a bullshit answer. That is NO reason to declare war on the People of this country.

I cannot stress this enough. The House and the Senate have declared war on We The People and the president is expected to sign it tomorrow. He has already said that he would not veto it. Do you fucking idiots have any god damned idea what you are fucking with. I personally fit into several of the “suspected terrorist” categories. When the government decides to come and get me, PEOPLE WILL DIE. Yes, I will most likely be one of them, but I will not be the only one. You fucking idiots are playing with a flamethrower in a fucking magazine and expecting life to go on. Do you have any idea what Tom and the other 283 congressmen have just done?

There is a saying in my line of work. I work in Industrial Safety, specifically in mitigating the chances of a dust explosion. Basically there are 4 things you need for an explosion to occur: 1) Enclosure 2) Fuel 3) Oxygen and 4) Spark. The saying is that ignition is free. You can do a very good job of reducing the risks of the first three, but ignition is free. What that means is that any little thing, the tiniest piece of scrap from an operation picked up and blown through the system until it contacts a ferrous metal will set it off. I was just told about an incident at a plant. The plant did everything they could to eliminate all hazards, and they did a very good job. But one day, someone was smoking outside in the parking lot and flicked the butt. A pigeon picked it up and flew into the warehouse, then got too close to a vacuum line and the butt got sucked in. An explosion occurred. It never should have, they did everything they could to prevent it, but the spark was free.

Now, having said that, the government has created the first three conditions and now you’re playing with matches.

Tom, and everyone else that passed this bill will be held responsible when the civil war that you have just declared on the population explodes.

So, again, tell me where I’m wrong. I will be very surprised if you can convince me I am wrong, but I do have an open mind. And if you can convince me I will share that with the people I know.

If you can’t convince me, congratulations on starting the next civil war. Are you prepared for it?

I’ll let you all know if I get an answer. Prior to this, Drew and I have been in irregular conversations regarding Fast & Furious and some other things. It was enough that I am confident he will recognize my name. Up til today I had respect for Tom, I can almost guarantee that respect is gone.

In response to LEO ProCards

If you’re reading this, you probably read David Codrea’s site, The War On Guns. Maybe you’ll recall the post from November 16th, 2011: We’re the Only Ones Taking Care of Our Own Enough.
Well, I was a bit ticked off when I saw that, and after reading some of the comments, specifically the one by Carl-Bear where he got the emailed response confirming that it was not a satire site… well, I had to do something.
Seeing as how I’m about 1,250 miles from West Palm Beach, I can’t just stop into the station and lodge a complaint. So, I decided to send an email to the dick that responded to Bear. I copied that email to some newspapers, FL congressmen (that I think cover where he works and where he lives) and found the Police Department that I was pretty sure he worked at and sent it to them too. As it turns out, I (and Bear) got the right one. Anyway, this is the email that I sent:

I have recently been informed of your site and your product. I made a comment at the blog that pointed me to you with the following line, “The law is the law, even if I think the particular law is BS, I’ll still get a ticket and take it to court to argue my case.”
I have been informed that a former leo wrote to you to see if you were a satire site and your response pisses me off. You told him “‘Breaking the Law’…Yes, if this person is Breaking the Law, the card should not apply. But for traffic offenses, let’s extend courtesy and show camaraderie to one another!!!” You also offered to send him several cards free of charge.
So, the next time I get pulled over for a traffic violation, I’m going to tell the officer that he can’t ticket me because West Palm Beach Detective Brian Gellin, CEO Law Enforcement Professional Courtesy Cards, www.leoprocards.com, sales@leoprocards.com, 561-601-4802 (c), 561-626-6777 (f) says that traffic violations aren’t breaking the law.
Are you out of your effing mind? The law IS the law. Traffic laws are still traffic laws. So, you are encouraging people to break the law, which is a crime in and of itself (what is the definition of a criminal conspiracy?)
Screw your “professional courtesy”. As an EMT, if I ever find one of these cards, the person holding it will get… well, hell, I’d like to say they’d get worse treatment than everyone else but that’s a lie, I treat all patients the same, even if they disgust me and I would like to say that you, sir, disgust me. Leo’s should be harshest to fellow leos since you are, after all, supposed to be setting an example to the general population. And you wonder why the general population are more and more disgusted by your kind. You wonder why people like me refuse to trust our lives to the police and instead go armed and ready to protect ourselves. It is people like you that make me not trust the police. As an active officer, how many laws have you broken? I would venture to guess that it’s more than just letting violators go with a handshake and a smile.

According to your domain registration, you are Brian Gellin of 2436 Holly Lane; Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33410. How are the Jewelry Store and the Production Company doing? Gee, isn’t public information a bitch?

I wasn’t really expecting much of anything to come of it, but I had to say something to someone. However, within 6 hours of my submitting that to the West Palm Beach Police Department I got an email from a Captain in the Internal Affairs Division. They stated that they had previously done an investigation of Gellin and issued punishment and that they would like to speak to me. I emailed back and when I didn’t hear anything Friday, I called this morning (that’s a good thing since my email ended up in the spam basket). She was wondering how I got my information and how recent it was. After telling her about the simple web search techniques I used and that it said it was updated in October at the oldest (most was newer), she asked me to resend my previous email along with having Bear forward his email to her (he has, I’ll be calling her this afternoon to confirm receipt). She said that Gellin was told to cut all ties to the LEO ProCards company, but this was several months ago and if he hasn’t then she will be able to push the issue higher with greater punishment for him. She agreed with me that he shouldn’t be behind a badge with the attitude he has displayed, but she is very limited in how she can deal with him (gotta love unions and bureaucracies, huh?)

I’ll post an update when I hear anything (she promised to keep me informed).

The simple moral behind the story? If you say something about a problem, nothing may happen. If you say nothing about a problem, nothing will happen. But if you say something, something just might come of it. Quit being a coward and do something about the wrongs that you see.

Update on the open carry semi-incident from the beginning of the month

Well, it’s been almost a month since I started my blog and posted Another Open Carry semi-incident, so I decided to write to the fair committee again. This time I included everyone that is listed as an “Officer”, “Director” or “Executive Director”, and I also CC’d it to the local paper. I will retract the email addresses and last names of everyone for now, because I don’t want to escalate to that level just yet. I wasn’t necessarily going to even post an update until I got some progress, but the only response I have received so far pissed me off. Here is the text of the first email I sent this morning:

Subject: Fair Ground Rules

All,
I originally sent the email below to fair@***** while the fair was still going on. I have not received an answer to my question, so I am now sending this to all of you listed as “Officers”, “Directors” or “Executive Directors” as I would like this question formally answered. I have also CC’d the New Age Examiner as I feel the public needs to know what the official policy is as well, in order to prevent future problems.
Please read the email below and respond to me as soon as possible.
Thank you,

————————————————————————–

Corey,
I am writing to you because according to the fairs website you are the president of the fair committee, and I have not received a satisfactory answer to my inquiry at any of the numbers I have called.
I would like the “Fair’s” policy on firearms on the fairgrounds.
I am requesting that this policy be provided to me in writing with a majority of the voting members signatures in assent (either for or against weapons on fair property).
I am asking for this because Open Carry is legal in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and I Open Carry everywhere I go [with the exclusion of work (because it’s prohibited by the owner) and when I am on the ambulance (because that is currently the law, although I am working on that one)].
Having said that, I have been open carrying for a couple of years now, including at the fair in previous years, and have never been approached and told it was not permitted until last night. Last night I was at the fair with my wife and kids and was looking for the “kid-safe” place (the one that does the fingerprints and pictures, etc) and couldn’t find it.
We happened to be near where several “officers” were hanging out (by the Meshoppen Fire Company building), so I asked them where it was. They saw the weapon on my hip and asked me if I “was working”. It was pretty obvious I was not as I was in no semblance of a uniform (jeans and a t-shirt that said “Don’t Tread On Me”) and pushing a baby in a stroller.
They said nothing else about the firearm at that time (and they also had no idea where the booth that I was looking for was… if the “officers” know where anything is, shouldn’t they know where the child safety booth is?) We walked away to continue our search and found the booth (about 30 yards from where they were sitting, in line-of-sight). Then they came over and asked to speak with me “over here” (I was already out of the main pathway). They told me that they just radioed up and were told weapons were not permitted (they also spoke over me every time I tried to ask a question). They told me that I should consider concealed carry (does that mean that concealed carry is allowed on fairgrounds but open carry isn’t?)
They said that my gun “made people nervous”. When I told them that I had carried on the fairgrounds before and no one had never said anything to me, they said “you shouldn’t have gotten away with it”. These comments from them bring up several questions in my mind:
1) If my gun makes people nervous, has anyone ever filed a complaint about it? I had never been approached before, and I’m pretty sure that if someone went to one of the “officers” about a “man with a gun”, and it is not permitted, they would have been all over me, especially since I have never hidden the fact that I was carrying one.
2) Why did they have to radio up to the office to see if it was allowed? If it is the fairs policy that firearms are not permitted, shouldn’t the people working “security” be informed of this policy? Shouldn’t this policy be posted at the gates and shouldn’t everyone working at the gates be aware of this policy so they could let people know before they entered? (I know damn well the people at the gates saw it when I entered)
3) Why did he suggest I carry concealed? If only “officers” are allowed to have firearms on the fairgrounds, then that wouldn’t be “allowed” either, it would just be invisible… so the “officer” suggested I break the law so I wouldn’t scare people? Does that make sense?

A little more info. Before we went to their station, we had been walking around the fair for several hours already, and I very clearly remember walking past the same 2 “officers” that confronted me several times (along with several others) prior to them confronting me about the weapon. Obviously they didn’t notice it. If they didn’t notice me open carrying, they are obviously not paying attention to detail and definitely would not notice if I was carrying concealed.
Secondly, as we were on our way out of the fair, a fist fight broke out after a yelling match not far from us. The fight broke out not 2 minutes after one of the “orange shirts” walked by the kids (they looked 18-21ish) that were already in confrontational poses (yes, I know what that looks like as I probably have more training than most of the “officers” in Wyoming County) and with raised voices. No “orange shirts” arrived at the fight before a girl broke them up (a couple minutes into it, it appeared to be a girlfriend). How am I more of a threat than these kids? I know they were loud enough for the one that had just walked by to have heard them (I could still see him on the far side of the fight from me, walking away), why didn’t he come back?

I tried calling the office today, and the man that I spoke to gave me 3 different answers to the same question. His first answer was “I don’t think it’s permitted”, his second answer was “it’s not permitted” and his third answer was “to the best of my knowledge it’s not permitted”. You can see how that is unsatisfactory to me when we are talking about the fair refusing my right to self defense. If you can’t give me a solid yes or no to something this important, then you obviously don’t know and I therefore will not believe whatever answer you give me next.

Again, I would like the “Fair’s” policy on firearms on the fairgrounds, in writing, with a majority of the voting members signatures to clear this up
for me. Anything less than a majority of signatures is simply personal preference at this point because I have not gotten consistent answers from anyone I’ve questioned.

I would appreciate a response as soon as possible because neither I nor my wife and children will be returning to the fair until I have my answer.
And, to be honest, if the fair’s policy is that I must be unarmed, then my family will not be returning to the fair again, this year or in the future, until this policy is changed.
Also, since the “Fair” has not made this policy publicly available, I can promise that I will, be it in my favor or against it.

I can be reached at this email address or at my cell (***)-***-****. Since there will be no more US postal service before the fair ends, call me and I can come pick up the document (at the gate if necessary). If you can’t or won’t answer before the fair ends, contact me for my mailing address.

And this is the sole response I have gotten so far… see what you think after reading it:

Approx 50000 people attend the fair, one person open carried and sent a long letter for explaination about this. ???

Im sure it will be delt with, thank you.

While that response was sent only to me, unless he sent it to everyone else BCC, I thought enough of it to reply to everyone from my original distribution:

So, George, either you weren’t paying attention when you hit send, or you are indifferent. I am the one who was open carrying and was told by the “officers” at the fair that it wasn’t permitted (after they had to check with the front office and probably talked to the same person that I did that didn’t actually have a clue what the official policy is). I am the one demanding an answer. Your answer of “Im sure it will be delt with, thank you.” is a rather piss poor way to handle public relations. I may be only one person, but I am a citizen. I am responsible for my own safety, and as such I am prepared to defend myself wherever I am. Since I am also a disabled veteran and unable to physically defend myself any longer, I carry a firearm.
I am the one that was told to break the law by your hired “security”. He told me point blank to consider carrying concealed. That has only two explanations: 1) firearms are permitted, but they don’t want to see them or 2) firearms are not permitted, but if you carry concealed we won’t see it so we won’t say anything to you (unless we recognize you and decide to harass you because we know you’re armed).
I wrote the big long explanation so that you would all know the background. I wrote my demand for your policy because I have no desire to break the law, and if I (and the public) know that your policy is to not allow firearms, I won’t carry there (if I show up). I do not believe those orange shirted thugs because I have dealt with them before (yes, those two specifically) and I know for a fact, from personal experience, that they lie when it suits their needs.
So, I say again, your answer of “Im sure it will be delt with, thank you.” is unacceptable.
On the other hand, I am trying to “deal with it” by getting an answer based on fact and supported by documentation, not someone’s opinion because they like to be the “only ones” with a gun.
Mark Roote

I am currently extremely pissed off at George. I do not know him currently, but I will know who he is soon (gotta love a small town for that).
I’ll keep you all posted, but I had to vent.

UPDATE
After I sent the last email, I got this response:

The fair has always had a policy regarding guns on fair property just as every other venue in the country does. The fair is a family event that attracts tens of thousands of people, particularly children. We do not wish to expose them to handguns and firearms. As a pro gun person myself, I understand your frustration, however, the fairgrounds is private property and we reserve the right to set the groundrules. In fact, as a result of your letter, the fair is in the process rewriting and revising the rules regarding prohibited items on fair property to make it even more restrictive. The new rules will be posted at each gate as you have suggested. When the new / revised rules are adopted, I will be happy tp provide you with a copy. Ultimately, the important thing to remember is that the fairgrounds is clearly defined private property. Additionally, nobody suggested you break the law. The fair had previously allowed for concealed carry provided it was in accordance with state and federal statutes. We do not have the authority to permit concealed carry without the proper permit(s). The whole idea is to not upset and scare fairgoers by having folks walking around with guns on their belts. You, being a veteran, should understand public sentiment and paranoia that surrounds the open carry of firearms, particularly post 9-11 and Columbine etc. The comfort and safety of our guests must be our number one priority. I would suggest that you apply for a concealed carry permit with the Sheriff in an effort to avoid any future hard feelings or misunderstandings. Thank you for taking the time to write.

best regards,
mike

He sent that to me and two other people. Why can’t people reply all? If you have something to say on this subject, everyone needs to hear it. Anyway, after that I sent the following to everyone on my initial distribution today:

Mike,
If I had received this answer in the first place, I would not have bothered to send out an email to everyone. But since no one was able to give an an answer, except for the derogatory answer from George, well, I got pissed off.
I know that the fairgrounds are private property and I know the laws regarding property owners rights. That was never the question, and I was never disputing that fact. My problem was that this supposed policy was not posted anywhere, either online nor on site prior to, or immediately after, my incident. And your “employees” obviously don’t know it. It is your right to restrict possession of firearms, and it is my right to decide not to do business with you because of that decision. If that is your policy, I will do my best to inform the public that self-defense is not permitted on the fairgrounds and I will not attend the fair. It is that simple.
I would like a copy of this policy when it is completed.

Now, for my additional comments to your response:
First, that orange shirt did, in fact, suggest that I break the law. He did not ask me if I had a LTCF, nor did he suggest that I try to get one (I have had one for more than 10 years). I also never told him that I had one because it was not relevant to the conversation. You can pretend to put words in his mouth, but unless you were actually standing there, you do not know what was said and in what context. He also did not say that the fair had a policy of allowing concealed weapons, he simply said they weren’t allowed, then he told me to consider carrying concealed.
Second, judging by your response, you are not a pro-gun person, you are merely a hunter. You are probably a member of the NRA. The same organization with a history of selling out the second amendment. You think that the “Right to Bear Arms” means that you can have them at home and in the woods, but nothing more. That is not the meaning. The Second Amendment was added to give the People the ability to restore liberty when the government gets too powerful. Here’s a quote for you: “Let your gun be your constant companion on your walks” – Thomas Jefferson. He wasn’t talking about walks in the woods.
Third, no, I do not understand the public sentiment and paranoia that surrounds the open carry of firearms. A firearm is a tool, nothing more. I have never seen, nor heard of, a pistol jumping off a table and going on a shooting spree. But I have heard several stories of murderers grabbing a hammer or a baseball bat and going on a killing spree. Will you be prohibiting hammers and baseball bats from the fair as well? How about forks and spoons? They’ve been used to murder before as well.
Fourth, 911 and Columbine have absolutely nothing to do with the open carry of firearms. In fact, if planes weren’t government mandated gun-free zones, there would have been armed citizens on the planes able to deter to terrorists. So, by increasing the amount of prohibited items on the fairgrounds, you are in fact making it so much easier for a murderer to kill large quantities of innocent victims because the murderer will know that they are easy prey. And if you think your 2 dozen on and off duty “officers” are adequate to protect your thousands of people, that’s what they thought at Virginia Tech too. How many people died there before he was finally taken down? How many deaths are acceptable to you?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my initial question. Please provide me with a copy of your new rules when they are available.
In the meantime, I will spread the word that the fair is a gun-free zone and neither I, nor my immediate family, will be attending the fair again.
Mark Roote

Well, at least I finally got an answer, now what do I do about it?

Randomness (re: Toby Keith)

OK, those of you that have heard of me before know that I am III and a citizen, but this post is not really along those lines (although it may be a sign of the times that we all gripe about)
I went to see Toby Keith last night.
I saw him back in 2006 and it was one of the best shows I had ever seen. I like(d) his music, and the show he put on was awesome. I had been upset the past few years because I hadn’t been able to go see him again… He is the first person that I have seen more than once when I didn’t know anyone not actually related to the band in some fashion (whether it was a friends sister dating a member or I knew a member personally, etc), so that says a lot as I have been to quite a few concerts in my life. His show in 2006 was that good.
Well, as I said, I went to see him last night with my wife and some friends. After that show, I am sorely disappointed.
I honestly would like my money back.
I wish I had never gone to see him again, because I would have remembered the great show from 5 years ago rather than the vulgar, drunken spectacle I witnessed last night.
The opening singer wasn’t half bad, but I didn’t catch his name (it’s not on the ticket and I don’t care enough to try to find it). Then Eric Church came on. The songs that I think were originals were all about drinking or getting high. The covers that he did finished him off for me. He’s not good IMHO.

Other advantages of using epimedium sagittatum include 100mg viagra effects curing impotence, preventing fatigue, relieving back pain and curing memory loss. Then came Toby. I was excited for Church to be done (yes, he was that bad) and I was excited to finally see Toby again. My God, I wish I could take it back. If I had seen this show 5 years ago, I would have stopped listening to Toby. Between messing up the words to his own songs, the vulgar hand motions and replacing “lonely” with “horny”, I’m a bit disgusted by his whole show. I liked the songs the way they were originally sung, but from this point forward I won’t be able to listen to it without hearing the crap he did last night.
If anyone knows who I can contact to lodge a formal complaint to Toby Keith, I’m all ears. I tried finding contact info, but I didn’t see anything available to the public… and I’m damn sure not going to join his fan club at this point.

And to make the night even better, I almost got into a fight walking to the car after the show. A couple of drunk kids (early 20’s if they’re lucky) kept getting closer and closer to me. I said “would you mind walking in a straight line?” They didn’t hear me, but my wife did and thought I was talking to her so she asked what I said. I told her I wasn’t talking to her, I was talking to them and motioned towards them. Well they noticed that and said something along the lines of “What, are you afraid to say it to us?” I looked at them and said no, and repeated myself again. Then they started talking about how drunk they were and it’s not likely that they can walk in a straight line. So I made the comment that I didn’t want to bump into them and either fall down or knock them down (they kept angling into me, I had to step around them a couple times, maybe the “straight line” thing was too much, but I just wanted them to pay attention to what they were doing). Anyway, the one that was a big part of the walking problem ambled ahead so he wasn’t next to us anymore. I was fine with that, but the really drunk one and his other buddy got behind us and were making comments about what to do if I kept “angling towards them”. So I told them I could hear them talking, and they should just move on. The really drunk one started talking crap about how the other one (the big one that walked ahead after I commented) has served in Afghanistan and killed blah blah bad guys, all for me, etc. The one that stayed behind tried to get him to walk on, but he kept on (he was obviously trying to intimidate me, which just pissed me off more). So I told him that I was a disabled vet. He then proceeded to tell me that he was active duty. My response was, “I’m happy for you, I don’t care”. The one that stayed behind with him kinda grabbed him by the arm and started pushing him away, but he made the mistake of “patting” my stomach as he did. So, since I was already pissed off at this point, I gave him a shove and said “don’t f’in touch me”. Well, the advantage to being short and thick is that I have a low center of gravity, and when I decide to shove someone they typically move… he took about 3 steps into the jackass (that almost fell). He looked a little shocked, but quickly and forcefully moved the jackass away from me (the jackass had started really hard trying to come back to me after the shove), but the other had to have been surprised by what he felt when he “tapped” my stomach and then the shove. I may look like a butterball, but looks can be deceiving. Anyway, they went away after that, which is a good thing (although the jackass could be heard making comments about “that fat little f**er”). I still had my pocket knife on me (yes, I got it in past the pat down at the gates, I’m never totally “nekkid”). At 3 to 1 odds against much younger and bigger people, there is no such thing as a fair fight. I may be little, but I am prepared to do what I need to do to preserve the life I have.

All in all, last night was a major disappointment. I’d like a do-over please.
